The importance of museum education
The museum of “Pedagogiki” Educational Center was founded in order to bring students in contact with the private collections and engage them into the essence of museum education. In this spirit the museum has housed the following Exhibitions-Tributes:
This exhibition held in 2013-2014, was curated by French Literature teacher, Sofia Siouti. The exhibition contained rear footage on the history of Aviation and archive material for the pioneer war aviator from Piraeus, Dimitrios Kamperos and the French aviator and writer, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry with particular reference to the world impact, of the most popular book,The Little Prince.
The students had the opportunity to admire the exhibits, which consisted of old moneyboxes-toys, hand-wound toys and mechanical tin toys, plushy toys, school pencil cases, objects that were used at the school of yesterday and drawing equipment. On the day of the exhibition opening, the parents attended a very interesting event, dedicated to retro toys with speeches held by skilled experts as well as songs-games by the children. On the same night Hellenic Post presented a new collection of stamps, based on retro toys in a specially designed area
The mineral collection of Dimitris and Evangelia Minatidou provided the students the opportunity to familiarize with the value and the utility of the minerals in our everyday lives. All this material was presented to the students, the teachers, the parents and other people who were invited at an exceptional event, organized by the Educational Center.
The Exhibition-Tribute to the History of Karagiozis was held in cooperation with the great teacher of Greek Shadow Puppet Theater, Sotiris Charidimos. The history Charidimos family is linked directly to the History of Karagiozis in Piraeus. Through this exhibition-tribute the students came in touch with this popular hero and the parents became familiar with Karagiozis history in Piraeus.
Nevertheless the audience of the exhibition had the opportunity to attend performances of Karagiozis accompanied by traditional music.
The Exhibition of a part of the collection of Georgios and Nikolaos Tountas with Nautical and Shipbuilding Tools, which was presented at the museum area of the school throughout the school year 2012-2013 aimed at the acquaintance of the students with the objects of the old ships.
The exhibition also aimed at providing the school’s teachers the opportunity of an interdisciplinary approach of that rear exhibits, inside and outside the classroom, and also approach the topics of “Seamanship” which constitutes part of the ancient, medieval and recent history of Greece, as well as the local history of the city of Piraeus.
The exhibits were divided in the following categories and subcategories:
- Navigating Bridge Equipment,
- Deck Equipment,
- Life-saving equipment,
- Mechanical Equipment and
- Shipbuilding tools.
It is also worth noting that the school possesses its own permanent exhibition on the topic: «Image, Sound and Writing from Yesterday» which also include four different categories of objects from the whole spectrum of the previous century, as well as several objects of the 19th century.
The objects included were:
- cameras, and film theater projectors,
- old radios and other old audio production machines,
- typewriters, duplicators and
- old school supplies.
The Exhibition-Tribute to the retro Children’s Books gave the opportunity to students and adult visitors to view very rear original editions, as well as offprints of 18 th , 19th and 20th century books.
At a special event organized by the school, skilled experts discussed the timeless value of children books and presented to the audience special editions of the Museum in every detail.
The Exhibition-Tribute to Grigorios Xenopoulos which was organized in cooperation with The Brothers Vlassi (Aderfoi Vlassi) Publications was held on the occasion of the completion of 60 years from the death of the great Greek author. Rear prints of Grigorios Xenopoulos works, were exhibited in the area of the school’s museum, as well as rear footage from his life and the performances of his plays.
We also organized a Literature Night focused on the spiritual heritage and the educational value of Grigorios Xenopoulos works.
On the same night the schools theater team presented some dramatized stories of the Zakynthian writer.
